Hispasat, Red Eléctrica Group’s communications satellite operator, is a world leader in content distribution in Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries and its satellite fleet is used by important direct-to-home television (DTH) and high-definition television (HDTV) digital platforms. Hispasat also provide satellite broadband and connectivity services, which include broadband access, mobility and back-haul networks, in addition to other added value solutions for governments, companies and telecommunication operators in America, Europe and North Africa.
Challenge
The Hispasat ground segment comprises several control centers distributed between Europe and America. These control centers manage the orbit of the Hispasat satellites and operate satellites in different configurations, send commands and plan and execute operations and tests in orbit. To carry out these diverse activities, control room operators need access to multiple computers and servers. However, the increase in the number of satellites to control meant that future growth and expansion was more difficult. As a result, a major control room update was needed and it became clear that KVM technology was essential to free-up space within the working environment and enable the reliable and flexible control and monitoring of a greater number of satellites.
“Adder’s high performance IP KVM solution has created a more ergonomic working environment. We can now control and manage a greater number of satellites by switching instantly between any of the computers in the server room using simple system commands without compromising on space”
Juan Enrique García, Engineer at Hispasat
Solution
After researching the different solutions available on the market, Hispasat specified Adder’s flagship range of high performance IP KVM technology, the ADDERLink™ INFINITY range. The solution enabled the removal of computing resources from the control room environment into a separate, purpose-built, server room. High bandwidth speeds and low latency give operators real-time, accurate control and management of any of the remotely located computers from a single console using only simple system commands. This reduces user station complexity and frees up space within the working environment. Due to the mission critical environment, the solution incorporates management server and network redundancy options to eliminate any single point of failure and ensure 100% up time, whilst Active Directory authentication provides an event log for IT and security audits. The solution also utilizes IP protocols, ensuring maximum compatibility with existing IT infrastructure, making further expansion of the operation in the future possible.
Result
Hispasat has achieved a more ergonomic working environment by eliminating the heat-generating and noisy computing equipment from the vicinity of the control room operators. This has enabled operators to focus on mission critical tasks with improved concentration and accuracy. In addition to the security benefits associated with keeping the computers in a secure server room, the IP KVM solution has created a more flexible working environment. From a single screen, keyboard and mouse, operators can access and control any number of computers, switching instantly between applications and carrying out multiple functions in quick succession with no delay. Now, the monitoring of a larger number of Hispasat satellites can be achieved without compromising on space and efficiency in the working environment.
