A La Plage 2

Title
About
Description
Founded in 2014, A La Plage Studio is a young post-production company who rent out their edit suites to artists. Within an atypical space of 1000m2 in Paris “intra-muros”, A La Plage offers all the stages of post-production to its clients.

The space, which is spread across two buildings, includes eleven image editing rooms, seven sound suites, two calibration rooms (TV/Cinema), a projection room, a post-synchronization auditorium, and two mixing auditoriums. This is joined by meeting space that allows the “residents” to collaborate in a very creative atmosphere. A La Plage offers all the stages of post-production from one central location, the management of rushes to the delivery of masters through image editing, sound, mixing, post synchronization and calibration.

Title
Challenge
Description
As a developing post-production house, A La Plage needed to maximize output from its mixing and post synchronization rooms. In order to improve efficiency, fulfil new tasks, and maintain output in the case of an incident, editors were looking to extend single and dual-head computer signals, via a small matrix, to switch from one user station to several machines. It was critical that they could achieve this across two premises located close to Gare du Nord. In addition, they were also looking for point-to-point extension of their dual-head editing machines.

They had a need to configure workstations quickly as some artists come in with their own computer sources, therefore requiring a plug and play solution. This allows them to connect the right edit suite to the right computer source in a matter of seconds. As some of the content being produced is highly confidential, the solution needed to be secure with controlled user access rights.

It was critical that the solution was robust, secure, scalable and adaptable. A La Plage were looking for a single-vendor system to aid maintenance and ensure compatibility.

Adder’s solutions provided this scalability – enabling easy switching between point-to-point mode and the KVM matrix. Thanks to the ADDERLink™ INFINITY Manager (AIM), A La Plage could use their RJ45 network without the need to deploy fiber optics across the facilities at an HD resolution.

By working with Adder, A La Plage have implemented a scalable solution that can grow as they do. An intuitive AIM server manages all endpoints which are distributed across their two sites along with some point-to-point systems set up in individual rooms.

When asked about their experience with Adder’s support team, A La Plage’s Technical Director Guillaume Bossu commented “Adder’s Support Wiki provides an extremely good knowledge base, and it allows us to quickly configure the units. We also made full use of Adder’s support team, and their advanced skill set, during the initial configuration.”

A La Plage are rest assured that the technology is mature, under full control and will suit their business needs both now, and as they develop.

About
Description
As one of the most popular animated films of the last decade, it is no surprise that Disney’s FROZEN® has been adapted into an on-stage musical. Debuting on Broadway in Spring 2018, the show has now travelled across the pond – opening in London’s West End in September 2021.

Featuring stunning video design by Finn Ross, and real-time generative content to provide the auroras and magical effects, the show really is destined to be a hit. Ross collaborated with long term partner Jonathon Lyle of Ammonite to provide the technical solutions for the project, and Blue-I Theatre Technology Ltd were appointed as the hardware provider.

Blue-I Theatre Technology Ltd are a team of engineers, technicians and designers who bring winning stories to life on stage. Supporting applications such as musicals, festivals, large scale conferences and national award ceremonies, Blue-I’s key services include set design and build, projection, lighting design, sound expertise, and more. Challenge
Description
When Disney’s Frozen decided to come to the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in London’s West End, Ammonite’s skills and expertise were called upon to bring Elsa and Anna’s story to life.

During the show, the audience are treated to incredible special effects and jaw-dropping scenery, which need to be controlled from six core media servers, three management machines and various multiviews – all of which must be accessible from various locations around the building. Additional complexity is added during rehearsals when the system expands to include temporary rendering machines and workstations which are placed throughout the auditorium for designers and technicians to create the show.

Ammonite and Blue-I identified the need for a flexible system that could give staff reliable and real-time access to all these different equipment types from any location, and at any time. A task that is perfectly suited to high performance IP KVM.

Solution
Description
Adder’s solutions have been at the core of Ammonite and Blue-I’s workflows for many years. Firstly, using the CATx range, and then upgrading to the ADDERLink™ INFINITY system over a decade ago. Adder worked closely with Ammonite, Blue-I, and the technical sales team of its UK partner, DigiBox, to design a resilient solution that supported users throughout the theatre. By combining the ADDERLink™ INFINITY range with wireless roaming laptops, the production’s engineers have the flexibility to manage multiple resources from different locations throughout the theatre. The ADDERLink INFINITY Manager (AIM) turns a complex system into a simple one, allowing the team to minimize hardware and ensure that everything is accessible and configured from a centralized location. At its peak, the system incorporates 17 x ALIF1002 receivers, 20 x ALIF1002 transmitters, and an ADDERLink INFINITY Dual 2112T VNC interface, which are all running at 1080p simultaneously. The system is centralized around a main and back-up AIM, with RED power supplies providing tidy rack solutions and additional layers of redundancy.

The Globo TV team chose the ADDERLink™ INFINITY high performance IP KVM matrix solution to give users access to multiple computers across the entire postproduction control center. To improve workspace ergonomics, all physical computers were relocated away from the control center into a dedicated and temperature controlled server room. This removed the need for production staff to physically move between computers, and instead allowed them to instantly switch between multiple computers on the network from a single location. The ADDERLink INFINITY Manger (AIM) was also positioned within the server room to provide full management of every unit on the network, and ensure absolute redundancy should the network switch, routing or hardware fail.

Challenge
Description
When a new interactive VR theater production in the City of London was proposed, Mesmer’s skills and expertise were called upon. The show brings HG Well’s timeless novel “The War of the World’s” to life with a unique and spectacular Layered Reality™ experience. Using live actors, cutting-edge VR technology, augmented reality and holograms, visitors are guided through 25 themed areas of an immersive walkaround theater set. During the experience, the audience enter four different VR rooms, each with 12 headsets running VR software. Each VR headset computer, along with five media servers, two sound servers and two lighting desks, must be controlled remotely from a separate control room in order to minimize physical access for troubleshooting and maintenance throughout the production. Mesmer identified that the management of several remote sources, via one workstation, without any loss of quality required a flexible and scalable high performance IP KVM solution.

Solution
Description
The ADDERLink™ XDIP, a high performance IP KVM extender and matrix solution, was specified due to its compact size and simplicity. The solution allows operators located within the control room to extend and remotely manage all VR headset computers with ultra-low latency, HD video, USB2.0 and stereo audio. The XDIP is delivered in a zero-configuration state so the theater’s operators can power up the units and start working immediately, without the need to install additional drivers or software. As the XDIP integrates with the theater’s standard IP network, Mesmer were able to reduce installation costs by negating the need to invest in new, dedicated switching devices and cabling, and the labor to set up this separate infrastructure. Operating over IP provides greater flexibility in deployment and user operation while compatibility with Power over Ethernet (PoE) switches further reduces set-up time by mitigating the need for additional power sources. PoE support improves reliability by leveraging the redundant power options delivered by PoE switches; crucial for the smooth running of live theater productions.
